Scholarship Opportunities

Each year, the Mathews Community Foundation participates in the scholarship program administered by The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia. Scholarships highlighted below were made possible through the generosity of local philanthropists who chose to support the educational pursuits of students from Mathews. Other scholarships established with broader criteria may provide additional opportunities.

MCF Scholarships

J. Martin Diggs Memorial Scholarship

This fund memorializes Martin Diggs, a former Assistant Superintendent of Mathews County Schools who served this community as an educator and minister over many decades. The scholarship benefits graduating seniors from Mathews and Gloucester High Schools who demonstrate fairness, compassion, and concern for others. Award Size: $500

Georgianne B. Laws Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in memory of Georgianne Laws, a native of Mathews County and a longtime math teacher and guidance counselor at Thomas Hunter Middle School. It benefits graduating seniors from Mathews High School who are involved in extracurricular activities and community service. Award Size: $500

Mathews Rotary Scholarship

Established by members of the Mathews Rotary Club to benefit graduating seniors from Mathews High School who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in academics, school activities and community service. Award Size: $1,000

Mathews Technical and Vocational Scholarship

This scholarship supports graduating seniors from Mathews High School who is currently enrolled in the vocational-technical program and plans to attend an accredited community college, trade or vocational school. Award Size: $1,000

Moss-Henderson Scholarship

This scholarship supports graduating seniors from Mathews High School who plan to attend the University of Virginia. Preference is given to students interested in teaching children with learning disabilities. Award Size: $500

Claude V. Simmons Scholarship

This scholarship supports graduating seniors who are active parishioners at the Church of Francis de Sales in Mathews. Award Size: $1,000 and may be renewable
