About the Mathews Community Foundation

The Mathews Community Foundation was formed in 1999 as a result of a conversation started by a small group of citizens. Its purpose is to serve donors and build philanthropic capital that will support current and future needs of Mathews County.

Since its inception, the community has responded by building in excess of $19 million in assets within MCF. As these assets continue to grow, the Mathews Community Foundation will be here to work hand-in-hand with our donors and the local non-profit organizations to keep Mathews County strong and vibrant.

Our Mission

The mission of the Mathews Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life for those living and working in Mathews by:

  • Actively and effectively encouraging local philanthropy
  • Establishing and maintaining perpetual endowment funds
  • Providing donors a vehicle to facilitate in perpetuity their charitable intent
  • Exercising leadership in philanthropy by assessing community needs
  • Making grants that effectively meet changing community needs

An Affiliate of the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond

Mathews Community Foundation is one of three affiliates supported by the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond. As an extension of their mission to serve, engage and inspire people through philanthropy, the affiliate program was developed to help smaller, rural communities encourage local giving to address their own unique needs.

The Richmond team provides cost-effective, centralized professional services like financial and investment management, administration and technical expertise so our local leadership can focus on asset building and community needs. Together, we are working to achieve lasting impact in the places we call home.
